Shimano's new Deore XT Race (PD-M8000) and Trail pedals (PD-M8020) use the proven SPD system but have been improved with a better shoe to pedal contact point. Each pedal respectively has a wider contact area of 2.8 mm (PD-M8000) and 3.3 mm (PD-M8020). The platform on each is also dropped by 0.5 mm. All of this adds up to a more noticeably efficient pedal.
